36 Things My Clients Do Before the First Session

Just kidding. Made you look though, didn’t I? Ok, I promise not to do that again to you until April. Or unless it’s really funny (said in Roger Rabbit).

But Coach Payal, surely there is something I need to do before I start my first coaching session? Well, chances are you already did it! I’ve never started a coaching session without first having spoken to my client to understand what they are looking for. Sometimes they don’t exactly know and that’s what we can figure out together.

What do you want?

At the end of the strategy session can you tell me what is it that you want? This could be something tangible or it could be a feeling. I want to spend more time on my passion project or I don’t want to be stretched so thin. If you don’t have this figured out, we can work through this. There are many times where clients come to me generally frustrated and they want support but don’t yet have a plan. That’s ok.

Assignment

Ok, yes, I gave you click bait and now I’m giving you work to do. Worst blog post ever! Feel free to leave your review on Yelp.

1. Define your three main areas of focus (goals).

You will get pulled in all different directions, that’s life. Having these defined helps guide you back.

2. Write out what the end result of the goals are if they were to be completely fulfilled.

Dream big and dream detailed! How do you spend your days having achieved those goals? How does this affect your family? Your wealth?

3. List what needs to be in place or happen in order for those goals to be achieved.

Do you need to clear some things off you plate? Do you need to add something? Is there a skill or resource you need?

I don’t follow the rules, I create space for you to create your own

Conventional wisdom out there tells me I’m supposed to share with you how to solve your problem. That is what you’re looking for after all. The way I see it, who am I to tell you how to solve your problem? You are a unique individual with a perspective and goals most likely different than my own.

What I can offer you is a safe space for you to explore all your feelings and the ability to change your mind without judgement. I can help you be accountable for the plan you put in place so you make progress and feel hopeful and excited to meet your future self.

Ready to talk?

If this approach sounds like something that could work for you – why not schedule a call with me? I’ll make time for you and we can talk. Even if you don’t sign up for coaching, maybe you’ll walk away with a plan for yourself.

If you’re here, and you’re considering how I might be able to support you, why not schedule a call with me? It’s free. There’s absolutely no pressure to buy anything – it’s just two people having a chat and seeing where it could go from there.
